About Sedation Dentistry
Sedation dentistry can help those who suffer from dental anxiety to relax and medications are used in order to relieve their anxiety. If you decide you want sedation dentistry in Canandaigua, then you’ll have to bring someone with you to your appointment because they will have to bring you to and from your appointment.

Oral medication is often enough to relieve anxiety in most patients. With oral sedation, you’ll be prescribed a pill prior to the appointment. You take it about an hour before you’re scheduled to go to the dentist, as this gives it plenty of time to start working. By the time you arrive at your appointment and throughout your appointment, you will feel more at eased and less anxious.

A sedative mask can be used, and this means you will inhale the medication, which is nitrous oxide. Some people refer to the medication as laughing gas and you will be given it before the dentist performs the procedure. If more medication is needed, then the dentist will administer more. You will remain awake throughout the procedure, but you probably won’t remember much afterward and sometimes inhaled sedation is used alongside oral sedation.

Another option is IV sedation, and this is usually given to those who have a great amount of anxiety because it’s the strongest option. It involves providing the medication to the person via an IV, which means the medicine goes right into the vein. You will feel relaxed after getting it and you will remain semi-conscious throughout the procedure.

Afterward, you will probably remember nothing. We partner with a doctor who is qualified to provide IV sedation and we arrange them to come to our office if you request IV sedation. Once the doctor arrives, they will administer the medicine.
